Demonstrating Fire Fighting Equipment
As North Abaco’s residents crowded the Treasure Cay village parking lot, Colin Albury and his Volunteer Fire Brigade demonstrated how quickly and effectively they can react when fire threatens,
After successfully responding to a bush fire at Sand Banks settlement on Wednesday the Brigade were at peak form on Saturday the 26th, impressing the onlookers with their expertise.
The “Jaws of Life” equipment was also put into action. It was very easy to imagine being trapped in that mangled Volvo and horrifying to think of it catching fire so when the Volunteers chopped open the roof and snapped off the door it was greeted with a round of applause.
The only piece of equipment missing from the TCESO Fire Department is a 3000-gallon Tanker Truck. We are now one step closer to being able to purchase that through the efforts of many ladies who provided a wonderful Bahamian style lunch and a table groaning with sweets. The trinkets and treasures collected over many weeks provided another source of revenue when the yard sale was over.
Even the children got into the act with a Lemon-aid stand. The day was not without it’s hilarity as grownups raced around looking for children so they could accompany them on a Fire Engine ride. You had to have a child to get on board!
Raising funds for the Tanker purchase was surely an important item but this event did far more. We were all on a learning curve and at the end of this day went home feeling that we were in good hands and far safer than we had ever been in North Abaco.
Congratulations to Fire Chief Albury and our Volunteers! And a huge Thank You to Mellie Cornish and Rhonda Lowe who organized a team of fabulous cooks. It was a wonderful day!
